Do you use GCash as a payment method when placing orders on Shopee? Well here’s some bad news for you.
A notification from the Shopee app indicating that there will be a 2% processing fee at checkout for orders paid with GCash, the largest e-wallet service in the Philippines has appeared quite recently. That’s an increase from the first it happened when it started charging late last year (2022).
This new rule applies to all GCash payment options: from the standard GCash Pay Now feature; GCash’s buy it now feature called GCredit and finally GGives which allows you to borrow money over a period of time.
This new regulation will come into force on February 13, 2023.
Shopee may be looking for new ways to make money, hence the increased commissions. Also last year, the e-commerce site reportedly laid off some of its work force to “streamline” its operations as it suffered a $931 million loss in the second quarter of 2022. The company has even started charging 1% wallet fees for electronics.
What are your thoughts on this? Is a switch necessary?
